Emigdio Vasquez
Emigdio Vasquez was an American - Chicano artist who was born in Jerome, Arizona and lived and painted in North Orange County, California where he painted over 400 oil works and 32 murals. Emigdio's paintings have hung in galleries, the residence of a US Ambassador to Rome, Italy, and in many homes. Emigdio's paintings reflect his views of everyday life, socio-economics, and interest with street scenes through portraits, still life images, and murals. He was a master artist with his use of color and gritty style creating a sense of time along with his applications of lighting, shadows, layers, and layout. His painting style reflects his studies ranging from the Old Masters to the Ashcan muralists/artists of the early 20th Century.
Emigdio was subject of many articles and interviews that explored his viewpoints and artistic approaches. However, Emigdio characterized himself when he was quoted as saying, “I consider myself a social realist painter because I like to paint the world that I perceive around me - an environment constructed of human and urban experiences of working class people. Through my art, I want to convey a powerful sense of the human struggle for dignity within the urban experience of 20th Century America."
