This painting is in the "Portraits of Influence" series. Theodore Roosevelt, bynames Teddy Roosevelt and TR, was born October 27, 1858, New York, New York. Theodore Roosevelt unexpectedly became the 26th president of the United States in September 1901 after the assassination of William McKinley. He was also a dedicated conservationist, setting aside some 200 million acres for national forests, reserves and wildlife refuges during his presidency. In the foreign policy arena, Roosevelt won a Nobel Peace Prize for his negotiations to end the Russo-Japanese War and spearheaded the beginning of construction on the Panama Canal. Theodore Roosevelt died in his sleep after suffering a coronary embolism on January 6, 1919, Oyster Bay, New York. He was 60 years old. As for quotes, Theodore Roosevelt, in a letter to Henry L. Sprague, on January 26th 1900, wrote: "Speak softly and carry a big stick; you will go far." Roosevelt described his style of foreign policy as "the exercise of intelligent forethought and of decisive action sufficiently far in advance of any likely crisis."
